HOUSEGUESTS UNLIMITED

A PROJECT TO HELP PARENTS WITH DISABILITIES GIVE THEIR CHILDREN A HOLIDAY IN FLORIDA

Children with one or more disabled parents are very often less able to have a family holiday than disabled children.

After all, two parents can usually cope with one disabled child in any accomodation, whereas one able bodied parent may find the thought of coping with the children and a disabled partner, in a strange place, just too daunting to consider.

Young carers provide their disabled parents with support, physically and occasionally financially. Often as a result they themselves suffer leaving themselves exhausted, without a social life, and schoolwork can start to deteriorate.

The Houseguests Unlimited project supports disabled parents in taking their children on a holiday to Florida. A specially equipped villa is provided for their use and a host family to provide them with as much support as necessary to ensure holiday is as enjoyable as possible. This is often the first break in years that the family will have taken together.

Financial support for the families is often needed, and a typical trip will cost in the region of 3500 pounds. Houseguests Unlimited invite four or five families out every spring, and aim to expand in the future, so the need exists to raise awareness and financial support in our project. The host family receive nothing from the Trust for their involvement.
